They are shown embracing and Anna tells Paul she has always loved him. Driving under the influence of alcohol, Paul rushes to the cemetery. She cries out and desperately scratches the satin lining of the lid. Meanwhile, Anna is shown awakening to the sound of earth being shoveled onto her casket. At the funeral, Paul places the engagement ring he intended to give her the night of the crash on her finger.Īfter the funeral, Paul drinks heavily and behaves aggressively with Eliot, who seems to taunt him and encourage him to see for himself that Anna is really dead, telling him there is not much time. Eliot injects her one last time and she slips into unconsciousness. Eliot holds up a small mirror, and while she stares at herself she notices her breath condensing on the glass and accuses Eliot of having lied to her about her being dead. The boy accepts and is later seen burying a living chick in a box.ĭuring the final preparation for the funeral, Anna asks to see herself one last time. One of Anna's students sees her and alerts Paul, who begins to suspect she is still alive.Īnna's student Jack ( Chandler Canterbury) visits the funeral home and Eliot tells him that they share a gift, the same as Jesus, who raised Lazarus, and he offers to teach the boy more. Anna comes to believe she has actually died when Eliot lets her see her corpse-like self in a mirror. Eventually, Anna escapes and finds a room with a phone where she reaches Paul, who hangs up thinking it's a prank. Eliot tells her she must let go of life as she had not really been living anyway. Anna unsuccessfully attempts to escape several times. Paul asks to see Anna's body but Eliot does not allow it on the grounds he is not family. Eliot injects Anna regularly with a fictional drug called hydronium bromide to "relax the muscles and keep rigor mortis from setting in." Eliot has a collection of photographs of corpses whom he has helped "make the transition". He tells Anna he has a gift and that he can hear the dead. She awakens on an embalming table in the funeral home to find the funeral director, Eliot, cutting off her clothes and telling her she has died. She drives off in a state of distress, and has a traffic accident. That night Anna argues with her boyfriend Paul ( Justin Long) at a restaurant. Middle school teacher Anna Taylor ( Christina Ricci) attends the funeral of her piano teacher where she meets Eliot. THAT'S how remarkably well that particular scene was shot/filmed.?????? I give it a thumbs up.Eliot Deacon ( Liam Neeson) owns a funeral home and talks softly to the corpses he prepares for burial. I'll do my best to keep my review as PG, or PG-13, as possjble, but, ladies, consider this your warning, and prepare to get those, like, pre-climax "butterflies" in yo' lady parts just from watching those two do the full-on nasty on the playground in broad daylight.

If I could rate specific SCENES rather than the movie as a whole, then I'd give the sex scene the park like 10 outta 5 stars. THAT'S how remarkably well that particular scene was shot/filmed.?????? I give it a thumbs up. Like, "Ok, where exactly are they goin with this flick.?" TBH, the beginning is rather dark and very depressing and gives u a bit of a feeling of confusion at first. It did take a cool minute before it actually started getting interesting/making sense. Overall, I really enjoyed the characters and Aubrey's Plaza's and Dane DeHaan's performances were great. I do think the story is a little muddled in its message, and Beth seems to get a trite and violent ending. I really appreciate the writing of the zombies in this movie - for the zombies, including Beth, to not be mindless walkers, but mostly normal people for a few days gave the movie some freshness in its approach and story tension. And, while the zombie genre doesn't seem quiet as fresh today, I have to remind myself that this movie is from 2014, the days of the height of the zombie craze. I think there are some great funny moments in this film.
